For students
One of cMEDA's primary objectives is to train the next generation of microbiome scientists. As such, cMEDA is committed to providing a road map for young investigators—including undergraduates, graduate students, and professional students—to excel in the field.
Student opportunities
cMEDA has set aside limited funds to support summer students to work with a cMEDA investigator on microbiome-oriented research. It is anticipated that the student will continue to work with their advisors full time during the summer and part time when classes resume.
Applications for these fellowships are due around May 1 each year.
For students who already have a faculty mentor, applications should include:
- A one-page proposal including specific aims, a one-paragraph introduction, and a two-paragraph research strategy
- A letter of support from a cMEDA faculty member confirming acceptance into the lab and the availability of sufficient research funding (required)
- One letter of recommendation from a faculty instructor or faculty supervisor
For students who are interested in microbiome research, but do not have a faculty mentor, applications should include:
- A short letter outlining research interests, background, and motivation for studying microbiome.

Medical school students launched the Student Interest Group in collaboration with the cMEDA. Currently, the SIG is led by Daniel Ratushnyak and Austin Miller, and includes a total of 16 students. We anticipate that these students will participate in the Summer Student Microbiome Scholarship Program.
